Description
Have you always loved the incredible show of a Wisteria vine in full bloom, but didn’t want to spend the rest of your life trying to control its growth? Introducing ‘Amethyst Falls’, a North American native Wisteria with a less aggressive habit than its Asian cousins, which can run wild! That said, don’t think this one is that mild mannered. It does grow quickly and will require some occasional pruning if you don’t provide it ample room to grow.
While the Asian types of Wisteria vines may take 10 years or more to begin flowering, Amethyst Falls Wisteria begins producing its lavender-blue flowers during its first year! Flowering occurs on new growth and is about two weeks later than that of the Asian types, so late-winter frosts seldom affect flowering. Flowers are lightly fragrant, lavender-blue, and borne in 4-inch-long racemes that hang down from the branches. What’s more, new shoots produced after the spring bloom will produce a second flush of blooms in the summer!
Deer and drought tolerance are other outstanding attributes that earned Amethyst Falls Wisteria a Gold Medal award in 2006.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing quickly 10 to 40 feet or more in height/length, Amethyst Fall’s Wisteria is ideal for use to grow up and over sturdy arbors, pergolas, and other over head structures that might benefit from the support of a flowering vine. Very nice growing along the tops of fences or rails or up tall columns or posts. Can also be trained to grow as a very attractive small, free-standing tree. As it often does in the wild, this wisteria can be grown up and throughout the branches of large trees without compromising the health of the tree.
Growing Preferences
Because Amethyst Fall’s Wisteria is a North American native it is widely adaptable to various soil types and thrives in a wide range of pH (4.5-7). We suggest a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility for fastest growth. The vine is happy in full sun or part shade however flowering will be diminished in heavy shade. If needed, prune in late winter to reduce the size. Can also be lightly pruned after the spring bloom, which often encourages a heavier second flowering cycle in mid to late summer.

I had ordered in 2020 a Wisteria from a reputable company in MO, a Chinese variety. It was of a nice size and I planted it in good soil in the fall. By Spring it was pokey and slow and I thought it would not make it. I just did not know as I had no experience with Wisteria. It started to suddenly grow and crawl and grow and crawl, but I got no blooms whatsoever. Upset this time I turned to Wilson Brothers and got a 5 Gallon pot on sale of a domestic Wisteria called Amethyst Falls. It arrived in a few days and I was excited as I also bought an arbor and had a hole ready. I was amazed at what I had received. The plant on a form was way over my head and I am 6 feet, in full leaf with lots of good growth and twisting long vines. I set it right out and it is growing like crazy, half covering the arbor in just three weeks. I am sure I will get blooms Spring 2022 and will keep you posted. Such a sensational plant.——————————-Tha’s awesome!! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
